The Sishen mine is a large iron mine lo ed in central South Africa in Kathu Northern Cape.Sishen represents one of the largest iron ore reserves in South Africa and in the world having estimated reserves of 2.43 billion tonnes of ore grading 58.6% iron metal.

History of South African Mining. Mining in South Africa started when the first copper mine was established in the Northern Cape Province in the early 1850s. In 1867 the first diamond was discovered in Hopetown after which diamond mines were established in Kimberley also in the Northern Cape.

The Kiruna mine lo ed in Norrbotten County Lapland is the largest underground iron ore mine worldwide. Owned by Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara LKAB the mine has a general annual production capacity of 26mt of iron ore and in 2008 produced 27.5mt of iron ore.

Steenkampskraal mine which is the world’s highest-grade rare earth elements mine is lo ed in the West Cape Province of South Africa. The underground mine is owned by Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine SMM . Steenkampskraal Holdings and Steenkampskraal Worker’s Trust hold respectively hold 74% and 26% stake in SMM.
In fact most of these mines have been described as gold mines copper tin and iron mines. In my personal experience and research I have found at least 25 ancient mine shafts in gold-rich areas and been told about dozens more by farmers all over South Africa.
