The IEE project participated in a meeting to discuss the challenges facing the cement sector in Egypt and the possible means to overcome it. The meeting was held on 26th November at the Cairo House. Dr. Attwa Hussien, head of the environmental management sector organized this meeting.
The report contains the main results for the Egyptian cement sector of the project “ Industrial Energy Efficiency in Egypt – Development of Benchmarking Reports for Three Sectors Iron and Steel, Fertilizers and Cement “, financed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO and the Global Environmental Facility GEF .
The result of our benchmarking analysis shows that California’s cement industry has the second highest electricity intensity kWh/t cement and fuel intensity GJ/t clinker among 14 countries/regions studied.

The direct CO2 intensity of cement production increased 0.5% per year during 2014 18. To get on track with the SDS, a 0.8% annual decline is necessary to 2030. Sharper focus is needed in two key areas: reducing the clinker-to-cement ratio including through greater uptake of blended cements and deploying innovative technologies including CCUS .

CEMENT FACTORY BENCHMARKING Some cement factories have participated in Whitehopleman benchmarking in every year since it’s launch more than 20 years ago. Others choose to participate every 2 or 3 years. Some cement companies retain Whitehopleman to provide company wide benchmarking of all the cement factories in the group.
The cement industry is one of the world’s largest industrial sources of CO2 emissions, accounting for 1.8 Gt/y in 2005, i.e. more than 6% of global emissions from the use of fossil fuels. Over the years the cement industry has substantially reduced emissions of CO2 per tonne of cement by improved energy
The EIA report should be submitted via the Competent Administrative Authority to the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency EEAA . The Competent Administrative Authority for Cement Manufacturing Plants is the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources. Use of this guideline alone will not be sufficient to prepare an EIA.

Energy benchmarking is the collection, analysis and reporting of data to provide industrial companies with a context for assessing comparative energy efficiencies. It is an important means of energy management, which allows companies a comparison with the ‘best of the best’.
In the private sector in 2015, 18 key cement companies developed the shared objective of reducing their CO 2 emissions 20-25% from the business-as-usual level by 2030, equivalent to 1 GtCO 2. Nevertheless, further policy efforts in all countries will be required to achieve the necessary cement sector decarbonisation.

the cement sector. In 2015, the sector offered employment to 47 thousand persons in the EU, distributed over around 350 enterprises. The industry was seriously affected by the 2008 economic crisis: between 2008 and 2015, turnover declined by 37%, value added by 49%, employment by 25% and the number of enterprises by 20%.
This report provides a global perspective on the energy transition in industry, with a focus on reducing CO 2 emissions from industrial processes in cement, steel, ammonia, and ethylene production. It shows that decarbonization of industry is technically possible through a combination
Cement industry in India, being a responsible and a mature industry, would certainly have to play its part in helping the country meet its obligations. This report is an effort to create a roadmap for Indian cement industry to achieve its target of 20% reduction in its Greenhouse gas emission intensity.
